A few months ago I saw my friend who lives in Bali post this on her Facebook page and I felt my heart say “you have to go!” and my mind say “you need to save money!”
I started to think….I love Bali… I love Yoga… Hiro loves to surf… Hiro has never been to Bali… and Hiro has had this Patagonia ad of Gerry Lopez pinned right next to his desk for a few years now….
Hiro had just decided to take the 200hour Yoga teacher training and when I checked the schedule for the Retreat it was exactly a week after he would complete the training. I took this as a sign that we NEED to go so I decided to listen to my heart and I signed up right away.
After we decided to go to this retreat I heard my heart tell me one more thing which was to ask my sister if she wants to join us on this retreat. She has been practicing Yoga on a regular basis for a while now even though she is busy taking care of her three kids living in the busy city of Tokyo, Japan.
And thanks to our mom happily agreeing to take care of the kids and her husband staying home to hold the fort, my sister was able to attend her first ever Yoga retreat…. in BALI.
Now, after a week has passed since the conclusion of the Yoga retreat, I have confirmed that it is always a good idea to listen to your heart.
This Yoga Retreat that I attended was special in so many ways and happened at such the perfect timing that it feels almost miraculous.
I don’t want to make this blog post too long AND I’m under the weather as I write this blog in Japan so I’ll try to make it short by just listing the few reasons for this trip being so beautiful…
the most beautiful place that this retreat was held Uluwatu Surf Villa, the BEST food ever served by Seewa (follow her on instagram: RAWMAZEBALLZ), the fact that I got to spend time with my friend (that posted the Retreat flyer) and her family that lives just 10 minutes from the Retreat location, and getting to meet the other beautiful Retreat attendees…
But I must say that Gerry Lopez truly made this Retreat so special… I am not a surfer and I was initially excited for Hiro that he was going to be meeting and surfing with him. I have to admit I didn’t know a whole lot about Gerry Lopez so I thought I’d do some homework by reading his book “Surf is where you find it”
and the more I read, the more I loved Gerry, and I started to get REALLY excited to meet him… and when that day came on the first day of the retreat as we were getting ready to attend the blessing ceremony he did not disappoint. The way he is so present as he talks to you and makes you feel like you have always been his very special friend is something that is so great to feel because I think that is one of the best gifts you can give anybody…. but actually not so easy to do.
For those of you that don’t know, he has been practicing Yoga for 47 years and being taught by him and watching him practice was an honor.
so thank you Gerry for your presence, your wise words, your teachings, and for being such an inspiration to so many people including me.
Okay, please let me add one more reason why this Retreat was so special (there’s more but I’ll post that some other time if I can) was the fact that I got to spend a whole week of quality time with my one and only sibling which is my OLDER sister (not trying to emphasize anything here).
We’ve been living in different countries for 18 years now so needless to say, we don’t get to spend a whole lot of time together and even when we do, she is busy DOING things because she is a wife, a mom, and an English tutor.
I knew she needed some time to get away from the DOING and practice some BEING and WOW, it was so apparent that she needed this Retreat. To watch her ALIVENESS slowly radiate out more and more during this Retreat was one of the reasons this Retreat was so special for me.
Just like any other siblings we’ve had our ups and downs and when I was a little kid I used to secretly wish I was an only child…. but I can’t imagine not having my sister in my life now and this one short week I got to spend in paradise with her and having great deep talks about life and relationships and just laying out getting a tan was the BEST time we’ve ever had together.
One big intention for attending this Retreat for me was to feel and actually become even closer to my sister and I can say for sure that this is what happened. So, as this magical Yoga & Surf Retreat in Bali becomes a distant memory day by day and I will be going back to my life back home in a few days, I know for sure that I will continue to listen to my heart when I hear it speaking ♡
